OPEN class: Gerstl performes best at first free practice in Brno

Ingo Gerstl on track in Brno 2017 during first free practice.

Three drivers had registered for the BOSS GP OPEN class at the “Masaryk Racing Days” in Brno (CZ). Season races 10 and 11 will take place at the circuit in the southeast of Czechia. The first free practice was scheduled on Friday morning (7th of September) at 11:00 a.m. It was a smooth practice session under best conditions.

Both BOSS GP classes – OPEN and FORMULA class – went on track together for the practice session. Just two OPEN class driver tested their cars on the track. Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed) showed a strong performance and a really fast best lap on the Czechian track. Bernd Herndlhofer (H&A Racing) debuted in the 2017 season – for the first time he went on track this years at the BOSS GP. Wolfgang Jaksch (F Xtreme Racing Team) didn’t participate on the 25 minutes lasting practices session due to technical issues. Nevertheless –  weather conditions in Brno are great: 17°, sunny and dry.

One red flag phase slowed drivers down after the first couple of legs, when local hero Veronika Cicha (H&A Racing Team) of FORMULA class spun off the track with her Dallara GP2. But finally drivers tested the circuit and reigning champion and current leader of the OPEN class, Austrian Ingo Gerstl, outperformed with his Toro Rosso STR1 on the Brno circuit. With his best lap in 1:37.072 min in his first lap on track he beat the BOSS GP track record in Brno (1:39,093 min), which he actually had performed himself. Since official track records are only counted during Races, the current track record will remain. But maybe Gerstl is performing more fast laps this race weekend?

Bernd Herndlhofer as well showed a strong performance at his season debut for the BOSS GP. For the first time this year the Austrian went on track with his Arrows A22 at the free practice.

It can be assumed, that the currently overall second ranked driver of the OPEN class, Wolfgang Jaksch, will be on track in the afternoon at the second free practice.

FORMULA class: Raghunathan shows fastest lap during first free practice

Mahaveer Raghunathan raced fastest lap time during first free practice of the race weekend in Brno 2017.

12 drivers had registered for the BOSS GP FORMULA class at the “Masaryk Racing Days” in Brno (CZ).

Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport) went on track first. With the exception of Walter Steding (Inter Europol Competition), due to technical issues, all other FORMULA drivers followed the Austrian on track. Weather conditions in Brno are great: 17°, sunny and dry.

One red flag phase slowed drivers down after a couple of legs, when local hero Veronika Cicha (H&A Racing Team) spun off the track with her Dallara GP2. But finally drivers tested the circuit with Mahaveer Raghunathan (PS Racing by Coloni Motorsport) finally racing the fastest lap of the FORMULA grid on the 5.403 km long track with an 1:44,907 min with his Lola Auto GP.

Raghunathan, staying seven laps on track, was followed by Florian Schnitzenbaumer (Top Speed) with a best lap time in 1:45,855 min. The German is back on track after not racing the races in Zolder (July) and Assen (August) and was showing a good performance during his nine laps on track during first free practice in Brno. Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport) completed the trio of the fastest FORMULA drivers at the practice session with a best lap time of 1:47,561.

Johann Ledermair finished first free practice as third fastest driver in Brno 2017.

Andreas Fiedler (Fiedler Racing), Peter Göllner (Speed Center), Henk de Boer (De Boer Manx), Karl-Heinz Becker (Becker Motorsport), Christian Eicke (Speed Center) and Veronika Cicha (H&A Racing Team) completed the grid with their best lap times. Since time transponders of currently overall ranked second of the FORMULA class, Salvatore De Plano (MM International Motorsport), as well as Armando Mangini (MM International Motorsport), ranked fourth at the overall standings, didn’t work properly, results are not completed.

It can be assumed, that Walter Steding, not taking part in the first free practice session, will be on track for the second free practice, which starts at 4:00 p.m. and will run 25 minutes.

FORMULA class: Early finish after a crash – Ledermair back on track and top of the field

Johann Ledermair on track in Assen 2017.

13 drivers had registered for the BOSS GP FORMULA class at the “Gamma Racing Days” in Assen (NED). Season races 9 and 10 will take place at the circuit in the northeast of the Netherlands. One free practice for the races was scheduled on Saturday (5th of August) at 9:31 a.m. It ended earlier than planned with an horrific crash by Klaas Zwart (OPEN class).

Both BOSS GP classes – OPEN and FORMULA class – went on track together for the practice session. Twelve drivers represented the FORMULA class. Henk de Boer (De Boer Manx) had to step back due to health issues already before the race weekend. Weather conditions were fine in Assen on Saturday morning: 18°, cloudy, but dry.

The practice session started slowly, due to two yellow flag phases in the beginning.  ‘PETER’ (Ray-Ban) spun of the track already in the first lap. Only minutes later, Wolfgang Jordan (H&A Racing Team) spun off the track as well. Then finally drivers tested the circuit at its best. Back on track after absence in Zolder (BEL) on 15th/16th of July was Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport). The Austrian was not only back on track, but also back on top, since he drove the fastest lap of the FORMULA class start grid at the free practice in 1:25,829 min with his Dallara GP2. As might be expected, Ledermair was followed by Mahaveer Raghunathan (PS Racing by Coloni Motorsport) in the Lola Auto GP with his best lap in 1:31,449. One can expect an exciting battle between Ledermair and Raghunathan on the track at the race, as we already have seen during the whole season.

The following drivers showed as well some neck-to-neck-laps, with some really close gaps: Marc Faggionato (Zig Zig), Christian Eicke and Peter Göllner (both Speed Center), Walter Steding (Inter Europol Competition), Veronika Cicha (H&A Racing) as well as Karl-Heinz Becker (Becker Motorsport). Meanwhile Wolfgang Jordan had to quit free practice early, after he spun off the track after five laps driven.

The free practice finally was cancelled after a horrifying crash of Klaas Zwart (Team Ascari) of the OPEN class. There won’t be another training session. The Qualifying will start at 1:04 p.m.

OPEN class: Free practice ends with horrifying crash by Zwart

Four drivers had registered for the BOSS GP OPEN class at the “Gamma Racing Days” in Assen (NED). Season races 9 and 10 will take place at the circuit in the northeast of the Netherlands. One free practice for the races was scheduled on Saturday (5th of August) at 9:31 a.m. It ended with an horrifying crash by Klaas Zwart.

Both BOSS GP classes – OPEN and FORMULA class – went on track together for the practice session. Ingo Gerstl (Team Top Speed), Wolfgang Jaksch (F Xtreme Racing Team) and Klaas Zwart (Team Ascari) represented the OPEN class,  Bernd Herndlhofer (H&A Racing) had to step back due to technical issues already before the race weekend. Weather conditions were fine in Assen on Saturday morning: 18°, cloudy, but dry.

The practice session started slowly, due to two yellow flag phases in the beginning (‘PETER’ (Team Ray Ban) and Wolfgang Jordan (H&A Racing Team) spun off the track). But finally drivers tested the circuit with Ingo Gerstl finally racing the fastest lap of the start grid on the 4.555 km long track with an 1:18,263 min with his Toro Rosso STR1. This insane time meant new track record in Assen by the Austrian – previous track record was a time of 1:18,765. Since official track records only count during races, but not during practice or Qualifying sessions, Gerstls time stays an inofficial record. Wolfgang Jaksch showed his best lap in 1:33,210 with his Super Aguri SA06, having a clear gap to leading Gerstl.

It was not a good day for Klaas Zwart in front of his home audience. While overtaking Marc Faggionato (Zig Zag, FORMULA class) with still seven minutes of the practice session to go, the Dutch flew off the track, crashed into the wall at the beginning of the curve to the home stretch at high speed with his car catching fire. Luckily the Dutch wasn’t injured at the heavy crash, but his Jaguar R5 suffered serious damage. “I feel pure frustration”, Zwart told us after the crash. “I overtook him, probably he didn’t see me. I felt a hit and catapulted of the track. Luckily I’m fine, no injuries. I hope, we can fix the car.”

The free practice finally was cancelled after the crash of Zwart. There wont be another practice session. The Qualifying will start at 1:04 p.m.

Mahaveer Raghunathan on track by difficult weather conditions at Zolder 2017.

The weather conditions around the circuit of Zolder in Belgium turned the practice day for the BOSS GP crews upside down. But at the end of the day, all cars went on track und raced their first lap times of the Superprix-weekend.

Seven cars had signed for the race-event in Zolder (Belgium) at the FORMULA class. Due to heavy rain, only three drivers went on the track for the first free practice of the day. Mahaveer Raghunathan (IND), current runner-up of the FORMULA class, was the first driver, who entered the track in his Lola Auto GP Gibson Tech 3.4 V8. And he was the fastest one at the end of the session, with a best lap-time of 1:42,982 min. Practice day at Paul Ricard – Ingo Gerstl is back on track, and on top of the grid

Practice 2 at Paul Ricard 2017.

Blue sky and 25° – Le Castellet obviously wants the best for BOSS GP. Fitting to great weather in southern France, the BOSS GP teams had an practice day, which mostly run according to the plan.

“Both training sessions went well with the exception of some technical problems of the Dallara from Karl-Heinz Becker”, race-coordinator Christian Gänse was satisfied with the performance on practice day.

Fastest drivers on track – the “usual suspects”. First practice session was led by Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed) in his Toro Rosso STR1 (OPEN class) with a best lap-time of 1:48.490 min on the 5.842 km long track. He was followed by teammate Florian Schnitzenbaumer (Top Speed), who got a best lap-time of 1:56.394 min in his Dallara (FORMULA class). Mahaveer Raghunathan (PS Racing by Coloni Motorsport) in his Lola (FORMULA class) sharply behind (1:57.001 min) and Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport) in his Dallara (FORMULA class) as well sharply behind (1:58.614 min) also remained under the two-minutes-mark.

Johann Ledermair, current leader of the FORMULA class overall ranking, improved his best lap significantly as well with 1:52.722 min and made it into the “Top 3” of the second practice session.

Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport) confirmed the good impression of the morning training and even stepped up his speed at the second free training in his Dallara GP2. He scored the best lap time of the session with 1:25.759 min, closely followed by Mahaveer Raghunathan (Coloni Motorsports) in the Lola Auto GP, reaching a best time of 1:26.396 min. First free practice: Marijn van Kalmthout shows his class

First free practice session in Zandvoort 2017.

First free practice of the race-weekend in Zandvoort is history and returnee Marijn van Kalmthout, back on BOSS GP-track after three years break, immediately showed his class.

As expected the grid tested a lot during the first practice. Nevertheless the results of the session show a couple of interesting issues. Marijn van Kalmthout (OPEN class) set the space for the fastest lap with his Benetton B197 F1 in 1:29.255 min, followed by the young Austrian Johann Ledermair (FORMULA Class) in a Dallara GP2 with 1:29.623 min.

As in Hockenheim at the first races of the season, Indian youngster Mahaveer Raghunathan (FORMULA Class) is driving at the top of the grid too, showing his fastest lap at the free practice with 1:31,415 min with his LOLA Auto GP. So he is an aspirant for the podium of the races as well.

Karl-Heinz Becker at the free practice in Zandvoort 2017.

Karl-Heinz Becker at the free practice in Zandvoort 2017.

Another returnee of the BOSS GP Championship after a break of couple of years is Marc Fagionatto. With his Dallara GP2 he drove his best lap time in 1:38.752 min, meaning being at the Top 3 of the FORMULA class.

Back on track as well – Karl-Heinz Becker. “The car wasn’t ready yet for Hockenheim. We look forward, finally to race in Zandvoort”, his team can’t wait for the races at the “Jumbo Race Festival” in Zandvoort. Having a long racing history and a lot of experience he started onto the track with his Dallara World Series by Nissan, racing a 1:49,087 min.

Second free training session for the BOSS GP start grid is set at 3:25 p.m. and will last 25 minutes. Since weather conditions, wind and rain, are challenging once more, it’s supposed to be another exciting session for drivers and teams.

Good impression by returning Jaksch and newcomer Fiedler at second practice in Hockenheim

Wolfgang Jaksch (OPEN class) and Walter Steding (FORMULA class) back on track, Ingo Gerstl (OPEN class) and Johann Ledermair (FORMULA class) confirm their good shape again – that’s the result of Fridays afternoon second free practice of BOSS GP at Hockenheim Historic.

14 out of 17 drivers, nine in FORMULA class, five in OPEN class, started the free practice session and finished it as well. As in the morning session the fastest lap of the FORMULA class was driven by Johann Ledermair (Team Ledermair Motorsport), in the OPEN class Ingo Gerstl (TOP Speed) lead the field again and marked the fastest laptime of all drivers once again, even with the slight difference of +0.255 seconds to the morning session.

While Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport) confirmed the first position of the FORMULA class in the second practice, BOSS GP newcomer Andreas Fiedler (Fiedler Racing) made a good impression and finished the session on third position. “I was aiming for a lap time around 1:30 minute”, he explained after the session. “So I am very happy with the result.” Finishing the second practice with the fastest lap time of 1:30.485 min Fiedler greatly improved from the first practice in the morning with a best time of 1:32.239 min. “Since BOSS GP is a new experience for me by now, the goal for the race in Hockenheim is to get a feeling for the characteristics and special features of the series. It’s great competition, great cars, great drivers. For me it’s like a dream coming true, being part of BOSS GP and racing such a great car. Years ago I dreamed of sitting in such a Formula racing car. Now I even drive such a car”, Fiedler, competing with a Dallara Mecachrome 4.0 V8, was full of joy after practice day at Hockenheim circuit.
