Report: Free Practice 2 Hockenheim

John Reaks and "Piter" in their World Series cars

Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed) was fastest in his V10-Toro-Rosso for the second time; Florian Schnitzenbaumer was first in FORMULA this afternoon.

The victory in the OPEN class leads – this is to be expected – over BOSS GP champion Ingo Gerstl, also because of the struggeling competitors:

  • Bernd Herndlhofer already had to have his Arrows A22 packed, after yesterday on the day of testing everything was still running smoothly, today nothing worked at all. Troubleshooting will continue at home and another attempt will be made at the second race at the Red Bull Ring (18-20 May).
  • Wolfgang Jaksch is still hopeful to participate in the qualifying tomorrow (10:35 a.m. local time). The Super Aguri Cosworth suffers from heart disease, at least the fuel pump could be brought meanwhile to run.
  • The fourth entered in the OPEN class, Phil Stratford (Penn Elcom Racing), was just ahead of the first FORMULA driver with 1:30.621 min. After he stopped in the morning, the mechanics continue to search for the cause in the afternoon.

  • With only one interruption, the BOSS GP came through the afternoon session. Bianca Steiner (Top Speed) spun at the branch of the new track, but with the help of the marshals she could continue.
  • The Frenchman “Piter” improved his time by three seconds compared to the morning (1:34.5 min) – despite a performance deficit compared to the GP2-Mecachrome he keeps up well with his World Series Renault.
  • Andreas Fiedler (Fiedler Racing) complained that the track “gives less” than last year. But with 7th place he is right in the middle of the very close FORMULA field. Only two and a half seconds lie between positions 4 and 9. Considering that some were still on the road with old tyres today, the most excitement can be expected here.
  • The fastest FORMULA pilot of the morning Salvatore de Plano (MM International) had to miss the second session. Increased engine oil temperature prevented the car from leaving the pits. Instead, Florian Schnitzenbaumer was fastest in Dallara-GP2, with 1:30.922 he was almost seven seconds behind his team mate Gerstl’s Formula 1.
  • Last, but happy was John Reaks at Speed Center. At 68, the Briton is second oldest in the field and for the first time at Hockenheim: “You learn lap by lap”, he said after the training. The fastest man of the team from Germany was Peter Göllner in 7th place.
  • Karl-Heinz Becker from Germany would also have liked to learn, but the engine did make that impossible. His engineer was contacted in Japan – but so far he could not help by remote control either.

Report: Free Practice 1 Hockenheim

Salvatore de Plano war schnellster FORMULA-Fahrer

Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed) set the best time in his Toro Rosso STR1, Salvatore de Plano (MM International) in his GP2 was the fastest FORMULA driver.

25 minutes of practice were on the schedule, but some red-flag interruptions shortened the driving time in the first free practice session. Due to the tight schedule, the clock continues to tick even during a red flag.

  • Salvatore de Plano sets the first time under 1 minute 30 seconds. In the end the Italian from MM International was second fastest behind Gerstl, and with 1:29.158 the fastest FORMULA pilot. “One second faster is possible”, last year’s runner-up said after the first practice session.
  • Phil Stratfords Benetton B197 stranded in the middle of the session in the hairpin bend, the mechanics suspect problems with the battery. Previously, he had finished second in the FORMULA classification.
  • H&A Racing and F Xtreme Racing are very busy: Both Wolfgang Jaksch‘s Super Aguri and Bernd Herndlhofer‘s Arrows had to visit the pit after only a few laps due to technical difficulties. Veronika Cicha was the only one in the team who could do a normal training – but she complained about the used tyres.
  • At Top Speed all eyes are on the three rookies: Manfred Loach completed fewer laps than planned, the red flags also stopped him – the Austrian could continue after a spin.
Bianca Steiner came through the training without a spin, she came 5th in the FORMULA class and is considered an insider tip for the races.
Debutant Thomas Jakoubek spun in his first lap at the Motodrom, at the end of the penultimate corner. After the engine stalled, the Austrian had to get out and the car was towed away.
  • The Swiss Peter Göllner (Speed Center) spun just after tipping the throttle in the hairpin bend and his GP2-Dallara also had to be towed away. Three minutes before the end, the session was released again after the second interruption.
  • The fastest driver of the morning session was Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed) with 1:22.122 min. His newly revised V10 engine was only tried for the first time yesterday on the race track.

New game, new rules

The new man of the rules: Rainer Werner become BOSS GPs first permanent race director

With Rainer Werner from Austria, the BOSS GP now has a permanent race director who brings a lot of experience and puts safety first.

Rainer Werner has been working as race director and steward for four decades. He supervised over 200 events in the different categories car, motorcycle and rally. Werner will be on site as race director at all BOSS GP races in 2018. This ensures that the sporting regulations are applied equally at every event – drivers can thus adapt to a consistent interpretation of the regulations.

Big Brother
Werner’s workplace is first and foremost the race control, where he can view the entire race track by video cameras. The tasks of the race control include controlling the traffic lights, coordinating the marshals, using the safety car and the initial assessment of collisions and violations of the rules. As a rule, independent race commissioners who analyse and evaluate disputed actions in detail decide on penalties imposed.

Clip and Clear
Between sessions, the new race director is accessible to the teams at a central location in the paddock. “A clear line right from the start,” says Werner, should ensure that the rules are observed. Safety is the top priority, overtaking under a yellow flag is dangerous for security personnel and would be punished immediately. Werner makes decisions transparently, a certain distance to drivers is part of the job: “During the races I only see the start numbers, names don’t matter.”

Drivers Briefing Friday morning at Hockenheimring 2018

Further rule changes:

  • Only Pirelli racing tyres are permitted. The official tyre supplier will supply the BOSS GP cars at each race and will be available for assembly.
  • Participation in the driver briefing is mandatory for all drivers and team principals. All crew chiefs receive a radio for communication with the race director at each event.
  • A speed limit of 60 km/h applies in the pit lane, overtaking in the pit lane is prohibited.
  • When stopping in the pit lane, the drivers must place themselves in the working lane at a 45-degree angle to the pit lane exit. Driving on the pit lane in the working lane is not permitted.
  • If the race is aborted by means of the red flag, all participants drive slowly into the pit lane to their position, overtaking is prohibited. After reaching the parking position and switching off the engine work on the vehicle is permitted – however refuelling is forbidden.

Ready for the ninth season: The BOSS GP 2018

Europes fastest racing series starts into an exciting year next weekend at the Jim Clark Revival at Hockenheimring with 19 starters.

First stop: classic meets modern
The season for the Big Open Single Seater begins traditionally at Hockenheim in Southern Germany. Next weekend (April 20-22), two races of the spectacular BOSS GP are scheduled in a setting that could hardly be more beautiful: Bosch Hockenheim Historic, in honour of Jim Clark, who died in Hockenheim on April 7, 1968, attracts tens of thousands to the Hockenheimring every year. Jim Clark’s 50th anniversary of his death is commemorated this year with numerous exhibitions and special tours commemorating the Formula 1 legend. In addition, more than 500 cars from all classes and epochs will gather in the Motodrom. Open doors await the spectators everywhere, as the ticket includes free access to the paddock, the exhibition pavilion, the pit roof and the pits themselves.

Epic battle between Zwart & Gerstl, Brenier wins again FORMULA class

Less than twenty-four hours after taking victory in the first BOSS GP race at the Red Bull Ring in 2016, Ingo Gerstl has pocketed his second top spot… with a bit fortune. Christopher Brenier triumphed again in the FORMULA Class.

At much cooler temperatures and thus much less grip, the starting phase was highly chaotic. Yesterday’s third-placed Hans Laub spun off hitting Wolfgang Jordan, who also had to retire. The crash called for the Safety-Car lining up the pack behind it.

rbr_preview_2016-1

Championship leader Klaas Zwart started from the back of the grid, but quickly moved up to P3 in the warm-up lap and chased Gerstl right from the start.

“I was quite surprised, when suddenly Klaas was in my mirrors.”

In an epic battle Zwart and Gerstl fought for victory over the full race distance which saw Zwart finally crossing the line on P1! But unfortunately the joy of his team lasted only briefly as he got a time penalty of 30 seconds for a false start, therefore the top spot went again to Gerstl.

“It was a perfect weekend for me. I had some troubles to get temperature in my tires, but in the end everything worked out well. Now, I am already excited to run on the Nürburgring”,

the Austrian was delighted.

Regardless, Zwart was content with his runner-up spot.

“P2 is OK. I wanted to go racing, so I pushed as much as could. In the end, I could secure some valuable points.”

Eventually, also Bernd Herndlhofer got a deserved podium, who was suffering from technical troubles all weekend long.

“I am not entirely happy, but compared to yesterday, Sunday’s result is good of course.”

rbr_preview_2016-4

The FORMULA Class winner did not come as a surprise, as Frenchman Christopher Brenier had been too dominant all weekend.

“What a weekend for me. I am so excited, I could extend my lead in the championship, even though it’s early in the season.”

Fellow-countryman Philippe Haezebrouck came second and was

“content with my performance. I wanted to finish on the podium and I did”,

ahead of Peter Göllner, who scored his second podium in a row.

“Two podiums in two races – what more could I ask for. But after yesterday’s great run, I knew, I could do it again today.”

Gerstl triumphs at home race, Brenier takes class victory

Local hero Ingo Gerstl drove in a class of his own in the first of two BOSS GP races at the Red Bull Ring this weekend.

When finally, the first rays of sunshine slightly cut through the cloudy sky, the Austrian started from Pole and immediately pulled away from the field, only shadowed by his main rival Klaas Zwart.

Third-placed Bernd Herndlhofer, whose Benetton had to be worked on at the grid, fell victim to technical failure and had to retire his car already in the opening lap.

rbr_race1_2016-24Suddenly the Safety Car appeared on the track, after both Klaas Zwart and Gilles Brenier had crashed their cars.

“It was entirely my fault. Our tyre pressure was too high considering that the temperatures had risen rapidly in the past half hour ahead of the start. When I turned the car, I spun off. It’s a pity, because I would have loved to get a podium for the team for all the hard work they have done. But that’s racing. Better luck tomorrow.”

Zwart’s DNF meant Gerstl had lost his last opponent for OPEN Class victory, but it was by no means cruising to Silverware.

“It may look easy from the outside, but believe me, it isn’t. You must keep your concentration up and avoid the slightest mistake. If you reduce the speed too much, errors happen. So I kept pushing.”

rbr_race1_2016-64German pair Wolfgang Jordan and Hans Laub sensationally completed the podium.

“I can’t believe it. I am pretty shocked to be standing up here on the podium, to be honest. I have of course profited from Henk de Boer’s time penalty, but it’s the rules after all. Maybe I can keep up my good form for tomorrow”,

Laub was all smiles, placing his Forti FG03 on P3 in the car’s first race in twenty years.

Wolfgang Jordan commented,

”I am delighted about the podium. Especially after the hampered qualifying. I feel sorry for Bernd (Herndlhofer) though. Looking ahead, I am pretty confident for tomorrow.”

rbr_race1_2016-66FORMULA Class victory went to favourite Christopher Brenier, who pocketed his first win of the season.

“Winning here is amazing. It was a very chaotic race and I had troubles to keep tyre temperatures high behind the slow Safety Car. We will certainly party a bit tonight. But not too much, as I want to win again on Sunday.”

Veteran Philippe Haezebrouck came second, ahead of surprise third Peter Göllner of the Team Speed Center Castrol.

„My goal was to finish on the podium and I have achieved it, which is highly satisfying. So let’s see what tomorrow has in store.”

Gerstl gets home Pole, Brenier dominates FORMULA class

Following rain-hampered free practice sessions, the weather for Saturday’s qualifying were not much better. Dark, grey skies, a damp track and below 10 degrees Celsius are not the most inviting race conditions.

Regardless, all drivers went out immediately in order to get as many laps under their belts as possible, attempting to get acquainted to the conditions.

rbr_qualy_2016-44The OPEN Class saw the Red Bull Ring entirely in Austrian hands in free practice with Peter Milavec on top in FP1 and Bernd Herndlhofer in FP2. That didn’t change in qualifying as Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed) had finally overcome his technical troubles and marked the quickest time in 1:16,868 minutes. However, it looked much easier from the outside than it actually was.

“The new tarmac is so dark that you can barely see the dry patches. It was tough out there today”,

Gerstl revealed.

“P1 in my home race is fantastic, of course. It’s a pity I had to sit out FP1, because more track time would have been very useful, especially in these conditions. But I am confident for the race, although Klaas and Bernd will push like crazy”,

he added.

Ascari driver Klaas Zwart placed his Jaguar R5 on P2 a tenth off Gerstl’s top time, just ahead of Bernd Herndholfer, who completed the Top 3 in a qualifying session which was characterised by countless yellow flags and spins into the gravel.

Wolfgang Jordan, who placed fifth, expects

“Gerstl, Zwart and Herndlhofer to pull away from us. So I will focus on a dog fight with Peter Milavec. I didn’t get one clear lap together in qualifying, so there is some room for improvement in the race.”

rbr_qualy_2016-16In the FORMULA Class, favourite Christopher Brenier continued to dominate and cruised to top spot.

“I am delighted, as I will start the race from the second row overall, so maybe I can actually challenge some of the OPEN Class drivers.”

Both Philippe Haezebrouck and Gilles Brenier confirmed their good form coming second and third.

Speed Center driver Christian Eicke was suffering from a hydraulics problem in qualifying.

“However, I am confident, we will work it out for the race. Otherwise, I will have to take our spare car.”
