Gerstl sets new track record in Assen
Assen weekend star Ingo Gerstl not only recorded wins in both race, but also set a new track record
In 2007, Britain’s Dan Clarke (Minardi Team USA) set the official track record for formula cars at the TT Circuit during the Bavaria ChampCar World Series Grand Prix in 1:20.727 minutes.
Already in qualifying for the BOSS GP event, OPEN Class dominator Ingo Gerstl smashed the record by an incredible 1.9 seconds. However, only lap times set in an official race are valid for records.
But the Austrian was determined to set a new best and eventually did.
He lapped the TT Circuit in his Toro Rosso F1 car in 1:19.371 minutes, clearly outpacing the previous top time. Chasing Gerstl on the track, also race runner-up and multiple BOSS Champion Klaas Zwart (Team Ascari) was quicker than Clarke in 2007 (1:20;125 minutes).
Understandably, the new record holder was all smiles. „That’s fantastic. It’s another record in my collection,” Gerstl said, who already holds the top time at the series’ next stop, the Masaryk Circuit in Brno (Czech Republic).
Thus, he is aiming for a new best lap time at the season closer in Imola, Italy.
