OPEN class: Gerstl chasing new track record again?

Ingo Gerstl on track in Imola 2017.

It was a well known picture, when Qualifying was finished: Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed) on top of the grid. The Austrian was followed by Rinus van Kalmthout (Mansell Motorsport) and Phil Stratford (Penn Elcom Racing).

Is Gerstl aiming for the next track record? After setting up a new best lap time on the track in Brno three weeks ago at the “Masaryk Racing Days”, the Austrian showed some super fast laps on the track in Imola as well. With his best lap in 1:21,703 min he improved his time from practice session significantly (1:23,168). Current track record is set with 1:20,411  – it will be exciting to see, whether Gerstl can improve his speed furthermore and come close to the lap record in afternoon’s race (start: 3:40 p.m.). Definitely Gerstl will start the race from pole position.

Gerstl was followed by Rinus van Kalmthout. The young Dutch showed a great performance in his Dallara GP2 Evo as well and performed his best lap in 1:27,270, which means further improvement from the practice session. With not only the second best time in Qualifying, but also second best time of the overall grid (FORMULA and OPEN class), van Kalmthout will start from position 2 into the race on afternoon.

The OPEN class driver trio was completed by Phil Stratford. The American performed his best lap in 1:32,213, which means position 5 of the overall start grid. Florian Schnitzenbaumer (Top Speed) as well as Mahaveer Raghunathan (PS Racing by Coloni Motorsport, both FORMULA class) performed faster laps than the OPEN class driver. So it is start position 5 at the first race of the weekend in Imola for Stratford.

FORMULA class: Florian Schnitzenbaumer drives to the top

Florian Schnitzenbaumer during Qualifying in Imola 2017.

Qualifying for the races on the “Peroni Race Weekend” in Imola brought an interesting result for the FORMULA class.

First surprise already before first cars went on track: Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport), currently leading the FORMULA ranking, exited his race weekend due to technical problems. “We have some issues, we currently can’t solve. Going on track would be to dangerous, that’s why we decided, to exit the race weekend on this point. We will leave still today and solve the technical problems of the car after returning home”, Johann Ledermair explains.

The exit of Ledermair for the last two races of the season brings new thrill for the final Championship decision of season 2017. Salvatore De Plano (MM International Motorsport) and Mahaveer Raghunathan (PS Racing by Coloni Motorsport) will fight for the title now, as long as both of them complete their races successfully.

But first – Florian Schnitzenbaumer (Top Speed) rolled up the grid with a great performance at the Qualifying. Staying nine laps on track, the German drove his best lap in 1:30,008 min – fastest driver of the FORMULA grid, overall third fastest time of the whole grid (FORMULA and OPEN class), which means start-position 3 for the race in the afternoon (start: 3:40 p.m.).

Close behind the Top Speed driver was Mahaveer Raghunathan. The young Indian, currently ranked in position 3 of the overall ranking of the FORMULA class, arrived with high ambitions in Imola and will definitely fight with a high attitude for the Championship title 2017. With his best lap in 1:30,341 he finished Qualifying as second fastest driver of the FORMULA class with a sharp gap to Schnitzenbaumer, but on position 4 of the overall grid.

But where was De Plano? The Italian – racing on his home track – is as well highly ambitious and aiming for the title of the Champion 2017. He performed his best lap time in 1:32,754, which means third fastest driver of the FORMULA class in Qualifying, sixth fastest driver of the overall start grid. So De Plano will start from position 6 into the race on the afternoon.

Drivers and crews now look forward to the first race of the weekend, which will start at 3:40 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

OPEN class: After Qualifying Gerstl on pole position, followed by Jaksch

Ingo Gerstl on track in Brno 2017 during Qualifying.

It was a well known picture: Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed) set the pace also at the “Masaryk Racing Days”. The Austrian performed the fastest lap of the grid and will start from pole position at first race of the weekend in Brno on afternoon. Gerstl was followed by Wolfgang Jaksch (F Xtreme Racing Team).

Weather conditions for drivers and teams turned out well: bit cloudy and 22° at the track in southeast Czechia. The six fastest drivers after practice sessions on Friday started first on the 5,403 km long track in Brno into the Qualifying and owned the circuit for a total of eight minutes.

Read more about the free practices on Friday:

As on Friday the pace of current leader of the OPEN class Ingo Gerstl was super fast. Driving his best lap in impressing 1:34,752 min in lap 1, there is a good chance for the Austrian to set up a new official track record in Brno. Current record is 1:39,093 min, set up by Gerstl himself before (note: official track records only count during races). Gerstl will start from pole position at season race 11 in Brno on afternoon (start: 3:00 p.m.).

The Austrian was followed by Wolfgang Jaksch, who performed his best lap in 1:41,986 in lap1, showing a significant gap to leader Gerstl with his Super Aguri SA06. Nevertheless the German finished the Qualifying as second fastest driver of the whole grid and will start from position 2 onto the track at afternoon.

Third OPEN class driver in Brno, Bernd Herndlhofer, went for just one lap onto the track. With a time of 1:42,581 the Austrian will start from position 4 of the overall start grid at the race in the afternoon.

FORMULA class: Ledermair is fastest at Qualifying

Johann Ledermair during Qualifying in Brno 2017.

A start grid of twelve drivers is racing the FORMULA class at the “Masaryk Racing Days” in Brno (CZ) for season races 11 and 12. Almost all of the “usual suspects” are ranked on the top positions of the FORMULA grid after Qualifying.

Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport), currently on position 3 of Championship ranking is obviously aiming for getting back to the top position of his class. At Qualifying in Brno he performed the fastest lap of the FORMULA drivers with 1:42,540 min instantly in first lap with his Dallara GP2, significantly improving his best lap time from the free practice session (1:47,561).

Ledermair was followed by Mahaveer Raghunathan (MM International Motorsport, Dallara GP2), who performed his best lap in lap 2 with 1:44,829 (gap: 2,289 sec). A real close gap of only 0,56 sec behind Raghunathan, Florian Schnitzenbaumer (Top Speed) was finishing his best lap at in 1:45,388 with his Dallara GP2..

So it’s the trio of Ledermair, Raghunathan and Schnitzenbaumer, who lead the FORMULA field of the BOSS GP after Qualifying and will start from positions 3, 5 and 6 of the overall start grid. Surprisingly Salvatore De Plano (MM International Motorsport), who showed strong and increasing performances during the last races and always taking a spot at the Top 3 trio, finished Qualifying this time on position five (1:46,502), with teammate Armando Mangini (MM International Motorsport) in front of him ranked fourth of the FORMULA class at Qualifying with his best lap in 1:45,743.

It was Göllner, who caused two red flag phases during Qualifying, when he spun off the track twice. Nevertheless the Swiss managed to bring home a good personal lap record, which finally brought him position 11 on the start grid for the race on afternoon (start: 3:00 p.m.).

FORMULA class: Qualifying in Assen – Ledermair fastest FORMULA driver

Johann Ledermair on track in Assen 2017.

A start grid of twelve drivers is racing the FORMULA class at the “Gamma Racing Days” in Assen (NED) for season races 9 and 10. The “usual suspects” lead the field of the FORMULA drivers at Qualifying.

Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport), loosing the overall leading position of the FORMULA class while absent in Zolder (BEL) in July a couple of weeks before, obviously is aiming for getting back to the top position of his class. He performed the fastest lap of the FORMULA class field at Qualifying, with 1:25,192 min in his fifth lap with his Dallara GP2, still improving his best lap time from the free practice session (1:25,829).

Ledermair was sharply followed by Salvatore De Plano (MM International Motorsport, Dallara GP2), who performed his best lap in lap 4 with 1:26,731. A gap of only 0,375 min behind De Plano, Mahaveer Raghunathan (PS Racing by Coloni Motorsport) was finishing his best lap at Qualifying in 1:27,106 with his Lola Auto GP, improving his lap time from free practice significantly.

So it’s once more the trio of Ledermair, De Plano and Raghunathan leading the FORMULA field of the BOSS GP after Qualifying and starting from the front positions of the start grid.

They are followed by Veronika Cicha (H&A Racing), who showed a great Qualifying and finished her best lap in her Dallara GP2 with 1:32,604. Karl-Heinz Becker left Qualifying already at first lap, due to technical reasons.

OPEN class: Qualifying in Assen – Gerstl saves pole position

Ingo Gerstl on track in Assen 2017.

After his awful crash during free practice in the morning, Klaas Zwart (Team Ascari) is out of the “Gamma Racing Days” in Assen for this weekend. Luckily the local hero wasn’t injured. Finally two OPEN class drivers were remaining for the Qualifying, since Bernd Herndlhofer (H&A Racing) had to cancel the races due to technical reasons already before just arriving in Assen. It is now a battle between Ingo Gerstl (Team Top Speed) and Wolfgang Jaksch (F Xtreme Racing Team) for the podium.

Apart from Zwarts cancellation of the remaining race weekend, the Qualifying at the “Gamma Racing Days” went smoothly. Drivers had to deal with difficult weather conditions: Sun and light rain alternated. At the beginning of the Qualifying a few drops fell down – a good challenge for teams and driver, finding the best setup for these conditions.

Ingo Gerstl was the first driver on the 4,555 km long track, showing a sovereign and fast performance in his Toro Rosso STR1 and securing the pole position for the race in the evening once more this season. He drove his best lap time in lap 6 with 1:23,228 min. Wolfgang Jaksch followed with quite a gap and a best lap time in 1:31,272 in his Super Aguri SA06, nevertheless improving his lap record from the free practice. Gerstl passed seven laps in total, Jaksch six laps.

OPEN class: Qualifying at “Zolder Superprix” – Zwart leaving the track early

Sunny weather after a rainy practice day on Friday made best conditions for the BOSS GP Qualifying at the “Zolder Superprix”on Saturday morning.

Cars went on track at 10:20 a.m., both drivers of the OPEN class improved their lap times from free practice sessions significantly. Klaas Zwart (Team Ascari) was the first one, who entered the track with his Jaguar R5 Cosworth 3.0 V10. The Dutch killed the track with his best lap time in 1:14,408 min in lap four and secured the pole position for the first race of the weekend, being the fastest of the whole start grid at the Qualifying. With this time Zwart was close to the current BOSS GP track record, which is 1:14,089 min. Unfortunately the Dutch had to quit the session early after the fourth lap, due to technical reasons.

Qualifying at Paul Ricard with some strange failures

Qualifying at Paul Ricard 2017.

While Le Castellet and its Circuit Paul Ricard continously are heating up, BOSS GP teams went on track for Qualifying at Saturday morning at temperatures of about 27°. Under best conditions Qualifying brought some “strange failures”, as Harald Michel, Official Scrutineer of BOSS GP Championship, recapped the session.

At first the Top 8 drivers of Fridays practice day – Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed), Rinus van Kalmthout (Mansell Motorsport), Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport), Mahaveer Raghunathan (PS Racing by Coloni Motorsport), Florian Schnitzenbaumer (Top Speed), Wolfgang Jaksch (F Xtreme Racing Team), David Moretti (Griffith’s) and Salvatore De Plano (MM International Motorsport) – entered the 5.842 km long track.

Two drivers left the Qualifying unplanned. While Wolfgang Jaksch with his Super Aguri SA06 failed due to a major driving error already early, Johan Ledermair in his GP 2 Dallara was stopped by a technical problem. “The car had an fatigue fracture”, Ledermair wasn’t pleased by his unexpected exit, “our team will work out on that. We hopefully will fix the problem until the race on the afternoon”. Nevertheless – with a 1:49.560 min he raced onto start position 3 for the race this afternoon before he had to exit. No technical problem, but a “clear driving error I made”, stopped Wolfgang Jaksch already in round 3. “I was delayed by Moretti in the first round. So I really had to push hard the following round, to improve my time. I managed to overtake him, but misjugded my braking phase afterwards; so I missed to take the turn properly and got stucked in the gravel trap”, Jaksch summed his performance up. “Luckily I made at least one counted lap”, he adds, starting with a 1:54.722 min lap-time on start position 6.

The two exits slowed down leading Ingo Gerstl, who raced onto pole position nevertheless. “If everything runs smoothly, I improve my time each round. So for the Qualifying I targeted a 1:40′ lap-time. Unfortunately we had to slow down twice during the Qualifying, which only gives us 8 minutes, to race a best time”, Gerstl summarized the Qualifying. “Of course I’m fine with starting from pole-position. But actually there could have been potential for a much better time on the track”, the current leader of the OPEN class made his point. He now is “looking forward to great race and especially the duel with Rinus van Kalmthout”. The 16 years old Dutch raced onto position 2 in his GP2 Evo Dallara.

In the second stage of the Qualifying the Top 9 until Top 18 entered the Paul Ricard track. Two more early exits by Karl-Heinz Becker (Becker Motorsport) already in round 2 and Peter Göllner (Speed Center) in round 7 made it 4 out of 18 drivers quitting the Qualifying earlier than planned. “Yes, we had some strange failures at this Qualifying”, Scrutineer Michel summed it up. “But apart from this fact Qualifying went well, we are satisfied with the performance of the grid.”

Started in the second chapter of the Qualifying, Armando Mangini (MM International Motorsport) with his GP 2 Dallara managed to improved time and position into to Top 8 field and moved forward in the starting grid; he will now start from position 8 in the afternoon.

The starting grid for season race 5 is set, and will be led by the “usual suspects”. The setup of Ingo Gerstl holding the pole position, followed by Rinus van Kalmthout on position 2, Johann Ledermair on third position promises an exciting top of the field.

Kick-off of the race is at 2:30 p.m. See and follow BOSS GPs Instagram channel for live updates and coverage.

Qualifying in Zandvoort: Hell of laptimes for the van Kalmthouts

Rinus van Kalmthout, leading the Qualifying in Zandvoort 2017.

What a blast! Rinus and Marijn van Kalmthout (both Mansell Motorsport) dominate the Qualifying at the “Jumbo Race Festival” in Zandvoort in front of tens of thousands of spectators. Even a drift off the track can stop Marijn van Kalmthout from securing a great position at the starting grid for the first race of the weekend this afternoon.

16 years old Rinus van Kalmthout started fast and got the blast in his third, at the same time last, lap at Qualifying and raced with a best time of 1:23.183 min on pole position for season race 3. His father Marijn van Kalmthout even just got two rounds on the track in Zandvoort, to secure position 2 at the grid for the race on the afternoon with a 1:24.896 min in round 2. After drifting of the track in the third lap, he didn’t return on the track. Both van Kalmthouts go for the OPEN class, racing with a Dallara GP2 Evo (Rinus) and a Benetton B197 F1 (Marijn).

FORMULA class was lead by Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport) in his Dallara GP2 once more. With a best lap time of 1:25.085 min he will start from position 3, followed by Mahaveer Raghunathan (Coloni Motorsport), who drove a 1:27.671 min best time with his Lola Auto GP. Raghunathan dropped off the track during the last minutes of Qualifying, what finished the qualifying couple of minutes earlier than the scheduled time of overall 30 minutes for the whole grid.

After crashing at the second free practice on Friday afternoon Florian Schnitzenbaumers Top Speed team did a great job, fixing his Dallara GP2 until the Qualifying. The German did well and secured position 5 for the race this afternoon with a best of 1:28.379 min. See the detailed Qualifying results at the attached PDF-file below.
